The Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) reports that through BioLi2.0 project they have successfully extracted and upgraded lignin into a product that can be mixed with current fossil based fuels. The team managed to mix lignin up to 30 percent with fossil raw materials to be co-refined and entered as a partial stream of fuel production. This means that existing equipment at refineries can be utilized for lignin-based biofuel production. The team has also made progress in scale up process for producing odourless lignin.
