A joint research by Mojgan Nejad from Michigan State University, proves that phenol in phenolic adhesive formulation can be fully replaced by lignin. Up till Nejad’s research only up to 50 percent partial replacement with lignin was possible. Nejad’s research is the first one to successfully substitute 100 percent of phenol with lignin. The research team tested plywood samples made with lignin based adhesives. Under wet and dry conditions, plywood samples made with lignin based adhesives showed similar shear strength to those made with commercial petroleum based adhesives. Continue to original source…
