Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, have developed a 3D printing material based on lignin which is a renewable feedstock. Researchers at ORNL combined a a melt-stable hardwood lignin with low-melting nylon and carbon fiber. Combining the lignin with nylon and carbon fiber created a composite with right characteristics for 3D printing process. Lignin content of the composite is up to 50%, higher compared to previous works. The lignin-nylon composite is patent-pending and work at ORNL is ongoing to refine the material and find other ways to process it.Continue to original story…
