Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM in Bremen have developed lignin-based binder to be used in paint primer formulations. So far, the focus has been producing lignin monomeric starting materials that has the same properties. Researchers at IFAM took a different approach by standardizing and modifying the whole substance. Researchers report that the primer produced by this approach has comparable key properties such as corrosion protection, adhesion or applicability to primers based on petrochemicals.
